Bear in mind that both sites close at 6 p.m. It is possible to do both in a day if you are organised, but don’t expect to see everything and be sure to arrive at the Arsenale promptly upon opening at 10 a.m. To appreciate the two main venues at the Biennale, we recommend taking two days to explore each site. Music lovers can take advantage of the fixed subscription ticket which allows entry to five concerts. Enjoy the art or architecture installations at the Giardini by day, followed by dinner at Al Covo and a concert at the Teatro Piccolo at the Arsenale come the evening. A month or so before the Biennale ends, the exhibition spaces are far less busy as well. The Festival for Contemporary Music runs later in September, early October, which is not only our favourite time to visit the biennale, it is also one of the best times to experience Venice as a whole. There tends to be a lull in the number of tourists between the height of summer and Christmas and the temperatures are cool and comfortable without being too cold. If you can handle Venice when it’s busy and love cinema, many of the film screenings are open to the public, providing a great opportunity to combine two world-famous events. ![]() In late August, early September the most successful directors and actors descend upon the red carpet at Lido di Venezia for the Venice Film Festival, upholding the glamorous status of the city. The best time to visit the Venice Biennale 125 years after the first exhibition was held at the Giardini, the prestigious institution is still growing: Ghana, Madagascar, Malaysia and Pakistan participated for the first time in 2019. The former naval shipyard of the Venetian Republic now hosts 23 national pavilions, including countries like Italy, China, South Africa and Mexico. The Biennale was expanded to the Arsenale in 1980 before spilling out across the rest of the city. And in 1993 Hans Haacke made history by smashing the floor of the German Pavilion, built by Hitler in 1938, to pieces. In under twenty years time Pop Art would arrive in Europe with Robert Rauchenberg, marking a shift in the contemporary art scene to America. Peggy Guggenheim displayed her modern art collection in 1948, marking the first appearance outside of the USA of a new generation of American painters, including Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. In 1909 Marinetti dropped his manifesto from the campanile in the Piazza San Marco, giving rise to Italian Futurism. The Biennale has long been a world stage for landmark events, revealing Japanese and Indian cinema to the west for the first time and showcasing major works by the likes of Kusama, Modigliani and Klimt. The world’s first Film Festival was founded in Venice in 1932, which still draws famous film stars and directors to the city. In the 1930s new festivals in music, cinema and theatre were brought to life. Initially housed in the Napoleonic gardens of the Giardini, Belgium was the first country to open a national pavilion in 1907, followed shortly after by Great Britain, Germany and Hungary in 1909. This guide offers advice on how best to maximise your time between the Arsenale, Giardini and outlying pavilions, as well as a brief history of the institution and our favourite time to visit. The Venice Biennale is divided across multiple sites around the city. Each year, the committee sets an overarching theme that contributing countries must respond to, establishing a relationship, however minute, between diverse curatorial visions. It is considered one of the most prestigious cultural institutions and is responsible for the organisation of the annual Venice Film Festival and Contemporary Music Festival.Ĭelebrating groundbreaking artists and pioneering architecture, the Biennale reflects on topical issues in world politics, society and contemporary culture. Attracting half a million visitors, it hosts up to 90 countries in the historic Pavilions scattered across the city. The Venice Biennale runs from May to November each year and alternates between art and architecture exhibitions. This world-renowned event has helped consolidate Venice’s reputation as one of the leading cities for contemporary art and culture in Europe.

![]() The following is a summary of selected terms and phrases used throughout this design guide. Description Selected Terms and Definitions Appropriate use and application of the concepts illustrated in these details will vary based on performance considerations and environmental conditions unique to each project and, therefore, do not represent the final opinion or recommendation of the author of each section or the committee members responsible for the development of the WBDG. The details associated with this section of the BEDG on the WBDG were developed by committee and are intended solely as a means to illustrate general design and construction concepts only. Specifically, it focuses on six (6) commonly specified exterior wall systems in the United States, and illustrates how proper selection, use and integration of the various materials, components and systems that comprise those wall systems is critical to the long-term durability and performance of the building enclosure. This guide, and the additional resources referenced herein, is intended to facilitate a better understanding of the basic principles behind heat, air, and moisture transfer (including bulk rain water penetration and precipitation management) through the exterior walls of a building or structure. However, despite the recent emphasis on blast-resistant wall systems and hardening of the building enclosure (see the Blast Resistance section for additional information on this topic), uncontrolled rainwater penetration and moisture ingress remain two of the most common threats to the structural integrity and performance of the building enclosure. This is particularly true when one considers the emerging threat of terrorism and the impact of that threat on the design and construction of the building enclosure. However, as our needs have evolved and technologies have advanced, the demand placed on designers to both understand, and integrate, a wide range of increasingly complex materials, components, and systems into the building enclosure has grown in equal proportion. This fundamental need for shelter is a concept that is as old as the recorded history of mankind. The basic function of the envelope or enclosure of a building or structure is to protect the covered or otherwise conditioned interior spaces from the surrounding environment. Comprising a mixture of world famous city names and place names alongside a handful of instantly recognizable names and surnames (and, for some reason, the random word kilogramme), it remained in use until the 1960s when the NATO system all but replaced it:Īmsterdam, Baltimore, Casablanca, Denmark, Edison, Florida, Gallipoli, Havana, Italia, Jerusalem, Kilogramme, Liverpool, Madagascar, New York, Oslo, Paris, Quebec, Roma, Santiago, Tripoli, Uppsala, Valencia, Washington, Xanthippe, Yokohama, Zurich 2. Instead, it was the International Civil Aviation Organization, an agency of the United Nations, that developed the Alpha, Bravo, Charlie alphabet in the 1950s in an attempt to standardize all the various letter-by-letter spelling systems in use around the world. And despite arguably being best known as the NATO phonetic alphabet, this isn't the work of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. And yes, Juliett really is spelled with two Ts here (for the benefit of French speakers who might otherwise consider it a silent letter).Īlthough this system is generally called a phonetic alphabet, strictly speaking it's nothing of the sort: Alpha (as English speakers generally spell it), Bravo, Charlie is a spelling alphabet, entirely different from the International Phonetic Alphabet that's used to transcribe the pronunciation of words. ![]() Notice anything unusual? Marker BeaconsĬertain ILS installations will include marker beacons. However, the angle may vary from an airfield to another as there may be different constraints, including obstacles or ground formations. To do so, the GS airborne equipment provides a crossing height of about 50 ft at the runway threshold, with a standard angle of 3 degrees. The beams move moderately above and below the standard vertical profile that has been established for a safe approach and landing. Similarly, the GS airborne equipment uses two narrow beams that intersect, creating the “on GS” signal. This helps the ILS approach system to provide information regarding the altitude for the pilot to land the aircraft safely. While the localizer offers lateral guidance, the ILS glide slope is vertical. The pilot receives information regarding how far the aircraft is from the runway centerline via airborne equipment usually located at the opposite end of the runway threshold. The intersection is known as the “on LOC” signal or indicator. This is done by transmitting two narrow beams, one that goes moderately to the right and the other to the left of the centerline of the runway, and that intersect in that centerline. The localizer provides the lateral guidance for the pilot to align the aircraft with the runway properly. This is the primary component of the ILS approach. However, we want you to learn about all of them, so we describe them here below. Image source: The main componentsĪs it was mentioned above, there are two that are the most important components for the ILS approach and landing. Maybe they don’t have the age that Grandma’s Mortgage Lifter from the Depression era possesses but, nonetheless, they are a cross between a hybrid and an heirloom. Generally speaking, most people agree that they are a created heirloom. Seems a bit odd to me but, apparently, because World War II ended then and thereafter seeds were widely available from commercial growers and seed companies, whereas before ’45 your neighbor or a church member or your mom were the sources for your seeds. Hard core heirloom definitions say a true heirloom must be “borne of seeds that have been handed down for at least 50 years, but preferably 100.” Some folks pick a rather arbitrary date of 1945 that is seeds available prior to 1945 have heirloom status. So are Green Zebra tomato plants considered heirlooms? It depends upon who you ask. Today, they are widely available through other catalogues and nurseries and it isn’t unusual to find them at the farmer’s market or at high end grocers.
